Granulosa Cells

Follicular cells that support oocyte development and produce hormones during folliculogenesis and ovarian stimulation.

Full Definition

Granulosa cells are somatic cells that surround and nourish the developing oocyte within ovarian follicles. They form the inner layer of the follicle and are responsible for producing estradiol, progesterone, and other factors essential for oocyte maturation. During controlled ovarian stimulation, granulosa cells respond to FSH and LH, proliferating and producing increasing amounts of estradiol. At oocyte retrieval, granulosa cells are aspirated along with the oocyte and follicular fluid. Their presence and appearance can provide information about oocyte quality and follicular development.
