Varicocele
Pronunciation: VAR-ih-ko-seel
Enlarged veins within the scrotum that can affect sperm production and quality, potentially contributing to male infertility.
Full Definition
A varicocele is an abnormal dilatation of the pampiniform venous plexus within the spermatic cord, similar to varicose veins in the legs. It affects approximately 15% of the general male population and up to 40% of men with primary infertility. Varicoceles can impair spermatogenesis through increased scrotal temperature, oxidative stress, and altered blood flow. Diagnosis is made through physical examination and confirmed with scrotal ultrasound. Treatment involves varicocelectomy, which may improve sperm parameters and natural conception rates, though the decision to treat depends on various factors including female partner age and fertility status.
Usage
Usage note: Most common cause of male infertility that is potentially correctable through surgery.
