Fundoplication is a surgical procedure in which the fundus (upper portion) of the stomach is wrapped around the lower esophagus to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter and prevent gastroesophageal reflux. In bariatric surgery contexts, fundoplication may be performed concurrently with sleeve gastrectomy or as a revision procedure when patients develop severe reflux following bariatric surgery. The most common type is the Nissen fundoplication, which involves a 360-degree wrap. Partial wraps such as Toupet (270-degree) or Dor (anterior 180-degree) fundoplications may also be employed depending on patient factors and surgeon preference.
