Peterson's space is a potential defect created during Roux-en-Y gastric bypass between the Roux limb mesentery and the transverse mesocolon. Named after surgeon William Peterson, this space represents one of the three main sites where internal hernias can develop following gastric bypass surgery. Proper closure of Peterson's space during the initial procedure is essential to prevent this serious late complication.
