plication

Pronunciation: ply-KAY-shun

A surgical technique involving folding and suturing of tissue to reduce organ size or reinforce structures in bariatric procedures.

Full Definition

Plication is a surgical technique that involves folding tissue upon itself and securing it with sutures to achieve reduction in size or reinforcement of anatomical structures. In bariatric surgery, plication may be used to reduce gastric capacity without resection, reinforce staple lines, or manage complications. Gastric plication involves folding the stomach walls inward to create restriction similar to sleeve gastrectomy but without irreversible tissue removal. The technique may also be employed to manage staple line dehiscence by plicating surrounding tissues over the defect. While less commonly performed than resectional procedures, plication offers a potentially reversible alternative for selected patients.

Usage

Usage note: Folding technique; may be reversible unlike resectional procedures.
