Full Definition
Retrocolic describes the anatomical routing of the Roux limb posterior to (behind) the transverse colon and through the transverse mesocolon during gastric bypass surgery. This technique creates a more direct path to the gastric pouch but requires creation of a defect in the transverse mesocolon that must be closed to prevent internal herniation. The retrocolic approach is associated with different complication profiles compared to antecolic routing.
