differential reinforcement

A behavior modification technique that reinforces desired behaviors while withholding reinforcement for undesired behaviors.

Full Definition

A systematic intervention strategy that selectively reinforces appropriate behaviors while ensuring that inappropriate behaviors do not receive reinforcement. This approach includes several variations such as differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA) and differential reinforcement of incompatible behavior (DRI). It is particularly effective in reducing problem behaviors while simultaneously increasing positive behaviors.
