ILC

Also written as: ILC — invasive lobular carcinoma

Abbreviation for invasive lobular carcinoma, the second most common type of breast cancer.

Full Definition

ILC stands for invasive lobular carcinoma, representing approximately 10-15% of invasive breast cancers. This histological subtype originates from the breast lobules and is characterized by single-file growth pattern that can be difficult to detect on imaging and physical examination. ILC tumors are typically hormone receptor-positive and HER2-negative, with lower nuclear grade than invasive ductal carcinoma. The growth pattern can lead to underestimation of tumor size and multifocal disease, requiring careful surgical planning and often MRI evaluation.

Usage

Usage note: Always distinguish from LCIS (lobular carcinoma in situ) in documentation.
