locoregional recurrence

Cancer recurrence in the breast, chest wall, or regional lymph nodes after initial treatment.

Full Definition

Locoregional recurrence refers to the return of breast cancer in the same breast (local recurrence), chest wall after mastectomy, or regional lymph node basins including axillary, supraclavicular, infraclavicular, or internal mammary nodes. This pattern of recurrence is distinguished from distant metastasis and may occur months to years after primary treatment. Locoregional recurrences often indicate inadequate initial local control and may be associated with increased risk of subsequent distant metastasis. Treatment approaches vary depending on prior therapies and may include surgery, radiation, and systemic therapy.

Usage

Usage note: Sometimes hyphenated as 'loco-regional recurrence' in older literature.
