Margins assessment is the pathological examination that measures the distance between cancer cells and the inked edge of surgically removed breast tissue. This evaluation is critical for determining whether the entire tumor has been removed and influences decisions about additional surgery or radiation therapy. Margins are classified as negative (clear), positive (tumor at the edge), or close (tumor within a specified distance from the edge, typically 1-2mm). The assessment includes examination of all six surfaces of the specimen and documentation of the closest margin distance.
