Full Definition

Mammographic density refers to the relative amount of fibroglandular tissue compared to fatty tissue as visualized on mammography. The American College of Radiology BI-RADS system classifies breast density into four categories: A (almost entirely fatty), B (scattered fibroglandular densities), C (heterogeneously dense), and D (extremely dense). Higher mammographic density is associated with increased breast cancer risk and can mask lesions on mammography, potentially requiring supplemental screening with ultrasound or MRI. Density notification laws in many jurisdictions require informing patients about their breast density and its implications for cancer detection.
