A radiation boost is a supplementary dose of radiation therapy delivered specifically to the tumor bed following completion of whole-breast irradiation in patients undergoing breast-conserving therapy. The boost typically delivers an additional 10-16 Gy in 2 Gy fractions to the area at highest risk for local recurrence. This technique is particularly beneficial for younger patients, those with high-grade tumors, or cases with close surgical margins. The boost can be delivered using external beam radiation therapy, brachytherapy, or intraoperative techniques, depending on patient factors and institutional capabilities.
