meshed graft

Skin graft passed through a meshing device to create expansion ratios and improve drainage.

Full Definition

A meshed graft is autograft skin that has been passed through a meshing machine to create a pattern of small slits, allowing the graft to expand and cover a larger surface area. Common expansion ratios include 1.5:1, 2:1, and 3:1, with higher ratios used when donor skin is limited. Meshing also allows fluid drainage from beneath the graft, improving take rates. However, meshed grafts heal with a characteristic fishnet appearance and may require subsequent procedures for cosmetic improvement.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify expansion ratio when documenting; distinguish from sheet grafts.
