Z-plasty

Surgical technique using Z-shaped incisions to release burn scar contractures and improve function.

Full Definition

A plastic surgery technique that uses a series of Z-shaped incisions to release tight burn scar contractures and redirect tension along different tissue planes. The procedure involves creating triangular tissue flaps that are transposed to interrupt linear scars and redistribute tension across a broader area. Z-plasty is particularly effective for releasing contractures across joints and in areas where linear scars restrict movement. The technique can lengthen scars, change their direction, and break up the continuous tension that causes functional limitations. Multiple Z-plasties may be performed simultaneously, and the angle of the Z can be varied depending on the desired degree of lengthening. This procedure is commonly used in burn reconstruction to restore function and improve cosmetic appearance.
