Full Definition

Burn edema is tissue swelling that occurs in and around burn wounds as a result of increased capillary permeability caused by the thermal injury and subsequent inflammatory cascade. The edema is most pronounced in the first 24-48 hours post-burn and can be both local and systemic depending on the burn size. Local edema can compromise circulation and airway patency, particularly in circumferential burns or facial injuries. Management includes appropriate fluid resuscitation, elevation of affected extremities, and surgical intervention such as escharotomy when compartment pressures become critical. Understanding burn edema patterns is crucial for proper fluid management and preventing secondary complications.
