A burn matrix is an acellular dermal substitute that serves as a biological scaffold to promote tissue regeneration in deep partial-thickness and full-thickness burn wounds. These matrices are typically composed of processed human or animal dermis with cellular components removed, leaving behind the collagen framework. They can be used as a single-stage procedure with immediate autograft placement or in a two-stage approach where the matrix is allowed to vascularize before grafting.

Usage note: Often confused with temporary skin substitutes; burn matrices provide permanent dermal replacement.
