fasciotomy

Surgical incision through fascia to relieve compartment syndrome in deep burns.

Full Definition

A surgical procedure involving incision through the fascial layer to decompress underlying muscle compartments. In burn surgery, fasciotomy is performed when circumferential deep burns create compartment syndrome, particularly in extremities or the torso. The procedure must be performed emergently to prevent tissue necrosis and loss of function. Documentation requires precise anatomical location and indication.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguished from escharotomy, which cuts only burned tissue rather than fascia.

In Context

  • "The surgeon performed bilateral lower extremity fasciotomies due to compartment syndrome secondary to circumferential burns." — operative report
  • "Clinical signs of compartment syndrome necessitated emergent fasciotomy despite adequate escharotomy." — progress note
