Heterotopic ossification is the pathological formation of bone and cartilage in soft tissues where these structures do not normally occur, representing a rare but significant complication of severe burn injuries. In burn patients, this condition typically develops in areas of deep burns, particularly around joints, and can result in significant functional impairment and contractures. The pathogenesis involves the inappropriate activation of osteogenic pathways in mesenchymal cells, often triggered by the inflammatory response to severe thermal injury. Early recognition and treatment are important to prevent permanent joint dysfunction and maintain mobility.
