Topical antimicrobial agent with excellent eschar penetration, commonly used for deep burn wound treatment.
Full Definition
Mafenide acetate is a sulfonamide antimicrobial agent applied topically to burn wounds. Its key advantage is excellent penetration through eschar and into deeper tissues, making it particularly useful for deep partial-thickness and full-thickness burns. However, mafenide can cause significant pain upon application and may lead to metabolic acidosis through carbonic anhydrase inhibition. It has a broad antimicrobial spectrum including activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
