Full Definition
The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) is one of the oldest and largest cooperative cancer research groups in the United States, established in 1955 to conduct multi-institutional clinical trials. ECOG has developed numerous landmark studies that have advanced cancer treatment and established standard-of-care therapies across multiple tumor types. The organization is perhaps best known for creating the ECOG Performance Status scale, a standardized measure of functional capacity that is now universally used in oncology practice and clinical trial eligibility criteria.
