Breast density refers to the relative amount of fibroglandular tissue compared to fatty tissue in the breast as assessed on mammography. The American College of Radiology classifies breast density into four categories: almost entirely fatty, scattered fibroglandular densities, heterogeneously dense, and extremely dense. Higher breast density reduces mammographic sensitivity for cancer detection and is itself an independent risk factor for breast cancer. Many states require notification of patients with dense breast tissue, often prompting discussions about supplemental screening modalities such as ultrasound or MRI.
