Computer-aided detection (CAD) refers to software systems that use algorithms to analyze medical images and identify areas of potential abnormality that warrant radiologist attention. In mammography, CAD systems mark suspicious masses, calcifications, and architectural distortions with prompts or overlays on the digital image. While CAD can serve as a 'second opinion' to help radiologists avoid oversight errors, studies have shown mixed results regarding its impact on cancer detection rates and false positive rates. Modern AI-based CAD systems are increasingly sophisticated, but their clinical integration requires careful validation and quality monitoring.
