HPV (human papillomavirus) testing is a molecular diagnostic technique used to identify the presence of high-risk HPV strains that are strongly associated with cervical cancer development. The test can be performed on the same cervical sample collected for Pap testing or as a standalone screening method. HPV testing is particularly valuable because it can detect viral infection before cellular changes become apparent, allowing for earlier intervention and prevention of cervical cancer progression.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and HSV (herpes simplex virus) testing. HPV refers specifically to papillomavirus.
