A technique used during open heart surgery to prevent air embolism and maintain visualization of the operative field. The vent, typically placed through the ascending aorta or non-coronary sinus, continuously removes air that enters the left heart during valve procedures or other cardiac manipulations. Proper venting is critical for preventing cerebral and coronary air embolism when the heart resumes beating.
