far-field sensing

Detection of cardiac electrical activity from a chamber other than where the sensing electrode is located, potentially causing inappropriate device responses.

Full Definition

Far-field sensing occurs when a cardiac device electrode detects electrical signals from cardiac chambers other than the intended sensing location. For example, an atrial lead may sense ventricular depolarization, or a ventricular lead may sense atrial activity. This phenomenon can lead to inappropriate device behavior such as pacing inhibition, mode switching, or inappropriate shock delivery. Modern devices incorporate sophisticated filtering algorithms and sensing configurations to minimize far-field sensing while maintaining appropriate sensitivity to local cardiac activity.
