Full Definition

The pulse generator is the primary component of implantable cardiac devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators. It houses the lithium battery, electronic circuitry, microprocessor, and capacitors necessary for device operation. The pulse generator is typically implanted subcutaneously in the upper chest area and connects to leads that deliver therapy to the heart. Modern pulse generators are hermetically sealed and designed to last 7-15 years depending on device type and usage patterns.
