The high-energy electrode component of a defibrillation lead designed to deliver cardioversion or defibrillation therapy.

Full Definition

A shock coil is the specialized electrode segment of an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) lead responsible for delivering high-energy electrical shocks during defibrillation or cardioversion therapy. These coils are typically constructed from platinum-iridium or similar biocompatible materials and are strategically positioned in the right ventricle and sometimes the superior vena cava to create optimal electrical field distribution across the myocardium. The coil's surface area and positioning are critical factors in determining defibrillation efficacy and energy requirements.
