A safety feature that delivers a ventricular stimulus after detecting a signal in the post-atrial ventricular safety period.

Full Definition

Ventricular safety pacing is a protective algorithm implemented in dual-chamber pacemakers to prevent ventricular asystole when atrial pacing artifacts are misinterpreted as ventricular activity. When the device detects a signal in the ventricular channel during the post-atrial ventricular safety period (typically 100-120 ms after atrial pacing), it assumes this might be crosstalk from the atrial stimulus and delivers a safety ventricular pace. This feature prevents potentially dangerous pauses that could occur if the device incorrectly inhibited ventricular pacing due to crosstalk. While this safety mechanism is essential for patient protection, excessive safety pacing can indicate programming issues or lead problems that may need clinical attention.
