Epicardial Fat Pad

Accumulations of adipose tissue on the epicardial surface containing autonomic nerve fibers that can trigger atrial arrhythmias.

Full Definition

Epicardial fat pads are collections of adipose tissue located on the epicardial surface of the heart, particularly around the pulmonary veins and left atrium. These structures contain clusters of autonomic nerve fibers (ganglionated plexi) that can serve as triggers for atrial fibrillation and other atrial arrhythmias. During ablation procedures, these fat pads may be targeted with radiofrequency energy to achieve autonomic denervation. The fat pads can be identified by their characteristic appearance on imaging and their response to high-frequency stimulation during electrophysiology procedures.
