Electrophysiology study - a diagnostic procedure to evaluate the heart's electrical conduction system.

Full Definition

An electrophysiology study (EPS) is an invasive diagnostic procedure that uses intracardiac catheters to map the heart's electrical system and induce arrhythmias under controlled conditions. During an EPS, multiple electrode catheters are positioned in various cardiac chambers to record electrical signals and deliver pacing stimuli. The procedure helps identify arrhythmia mechanisms, locate abnormal electrical pathways, and guide treatment decisions including ablation therapy. EPS is considered the gold standard for diagnosing complex arrhythmias and assessing risk of sudden cardiac death.
