Full Definition

Force-time integral (FTI) is a quantitative measure that combines catheter contact force with the duration of force application during radiofrequency ablation to predict lesion characteristics. Measured in gram-seconds (g·s), FTI integrates the contact force curve over time to provide a comprehensive assessment of mechanical energy transfer to tissue. Studies have demonstrated that FTI correlates with lesion depth, width, and transmurality more accurately than force or time alone. Target FTI values vary by anatomical location and clinical indication, with typical targets ranging from 300-600 g·s for different applications. Modern contact force sensing catheters provide real-time FTI calculations to guide optimal ablation parameters and improve procedural outcomes.
