Maximum rate of left ventricular pressure rise during isovolumic contraction, measured by Doppler echocardiography.

Full Definition

dP/dt max represents the maximum rate of left ventricular pressure increase during early systole and serves as an index of global left ventricular contractility. It is measured non-invasively using continuous-wave Doppler of mitral regurgitation, calculating the time required for the velocity to increase from 1 m/s to 3 m/s (corresponding to a pressure rise from 4 to 36 mmHg). Normal values exceed 1000 mmHg/s, while values below 800 mmHg/s suggest impaired contractility. This parameter is relatively load-independent and provides valuable information about intrinsic myocardial function, particularly useful in patients with heart failure or cardiomyopathy.
