Full Definition

Deceleration time measures the time from peak early diastolic velocity (E-wave) to its extrapolated baseline, reflecting the rate of pressure equalization between the left atrium and left ventricle during early diastole. DT is measured using pulsed-wave Doppler at the mitral valve tips. Normal DT ranges from 160-240 milliseconds, with shortened DT (<160ms) suggesting elevated left atrial pressure and restrictive filling, while prolonged DT (>240ms) indicates impaired relaxation. DT interpretation must consider heart rate, age, and loading conditions, and is typically evaluated in conjunction with other diastolic parameters such as E/A ratio and tissue Doppler indices.
