Right ventricular systolic pressure, estimated using tricuspid regurgitation velocity in echocardiography.

Full Definition

Right ventricular systolic pressure is calculated using the simplified Bernoulli equation applied to the peak tricuspid regurgitation velocity, plus an estimate of right atrial pressure. RVSP equals the right atrial pressure plus four times the square of the peak TR velocity (RVSP = RAP + 4V²). This measurement serves as a non-invasive estimate of pulmonary artery systolic pressure in the absence of pulmonary valve stenosis. Normal RVSP is typically <35-40 mmHg, with elevated values suggesting pulmonary hypertension. Accurate measurement requires adequate tricuspid regurgitation signal and appropriate estimation of right atrial pressure based on inferior vena cava dimensions and respiratory variation.

Usage note: Always state as 'estimated' RVSP since it's calculated from Doppler measurements; specify if unmeasurable.
