HRpeak

The highest heart rate achieved during maximal exercise testing, used as the reference point for target heart rate calculations in cardiac rehabilitation.

Full Definition

HRpeak represents the actual maximum heart rate attained during symptom-limited exercise testing, as opposed to age-predicted maximum heart rate formulas. This measured value is considered the gold standard for exercise prescription in cardiac rehabilitation, particularly for patients with chronotropic incompetence or those on rate-limiting medications. HRpeak provides a more accurate basis for calculating target heart rate zones than theoretical predictions, especially in populations with cardiac disease. The measurement is typically obtained during cardiopulmonary exercise testing or graded exercise testing protocols.

Usage

Usage note: Always distinguish from HRmax predicted when documenting exercise parameters.

In Context

  • "The patient's HRpeak of 130 bpm was significantly below age-predicted values, indicating chronotropic incompetence." — Exercise test interpretation
  • "Target heart rate zones were calculated using the patient's HRpeak rather than age-predicted formulas." — Exercise prescription
