HRR

Also written as: HRR — Heart Rate Reserve

Heart rate reserve, the difference between maximum heart rate and resting heart rate used for exercise prescription.

Full Definition

Heart rate reserve is calculated by subtracting resting heart rate from maximum heart rate, providing the available range for exercise intensity prescription. The HRR method is preferred for cardiac rehabilitation patients because it accounts for individual fitness levels and medication effects. Exercise intensities are typically prescribed as 40-80% of HRR depending on the patient's condition.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from THR (target heart rate) in documentation.

In Context

  • "Exercise intensity was prescribed at 60% of HRR based on the patient's initial fitness level." — Exercise prescription
  • "The HRR method provides more accurate exercise prescriptions for patients on beta-blockers." — Clinical protocol
