rate of perceived exertion

A subjective scale used to monitor exercise intensity during cardiac rehabilitation sessions.

Full Definition

Rate of perceived exertion is a validated scale, typically the Borg 6-20 scale, that allows patients to rate how hard they feel they are working during exercise. In cardiac rehabilitation, RPE serves as an important adjunct to heart rate monitoring, especially for patients on medications that affect heart rate response. The scale helps ensure patients exercise at appropriate intensities while developing internal awareness of exertion levels.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as RPE; ensure context clarifies the full term when appropriate.
