CABG
Pronunciation: CAB-bage
Also written as: CABG — coronary artery bypass grafting
Coronary artery bypass grafting; surgical creation of alternative pathways around blocked coronary arteries.
Full Definition
Coronary artery bypass grafting is a cardiac surgical procedure that creates new routes around severely narrowed or blocked coronary arteries to restore blood flow to the myocardium. Surgeons harvest conduits from the patient's own vessels, typically the internal mammary artery, saphenous vein, or radial artery, and connect them to coronary arteries beyond the stenotic lesions. The procedure may be performed on-pump with cardiopulmonary bypass or off-pump on the beating heart. CABG is indicated for complex coronary artery disease not amenable to percutaneous intervention.
Usage
Usage note: Pronounced 'cabbage'. Do not confuse with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), which is a catheter-based procedure.
