Biological material used to close septal defects or augment cardiac structures during surgical repair.
Full Definition
A piece of pericardial tissue, either autologous (patient's own) or xenograft (typically bovine), used for surgical reconstruction of cardiac defects. Pericardial patches are commonly employed to close ventricular or atrial septal defects, enlarge small cardiac structures, or reconstruct portions of the aorta or pulmonary artery. The material is biocompatible, durable, and integrates well with native tissues. Autologous pericardium is harvested from the patient during surgery, while processed xenograft patches are commercially available.
