pulmonary valve stenosis

Narrowing of the pulmonary valve that impedes blood flow from the right ventricle to the pulmonary arteries.

Full Definition

Pulmonary valve stenosis is a congenital or acquired condition characterized by narrowing at the pulmonary valve level, creating obstruction to blood flow from the right ventricle to the pulmonary circulation. The stenosis can be valvar (at the valve leaflets), subvalvar (below the valve), or supravalvar (above the valve), with valvar stenosis being most common. In cardiac surgery, severe pulmonary stenosis typically requires intervention through balloon valvuloplasty, surgical valvotomy, or valve replacement depending on the anatomy and severity. The condition can occur in isolation or as part of complex congenital heart disease such as tetralogy of Fallot.
