bare metal stent

Also written as: BMS — bare metal stent

An uncoated coronary stent without drug-eluting properties, used in percutaneous coronary interventions.

Full Definition

A bare metal stent (BMS) is a coronary stent made of metal mesh without any pharmaceutical coating. While it provides immediate vessel scaffolding, it carries a higher risk of restenosis compared to drug-eluting stents. BMSs are still used in specific clinical scenarios where shorter dual antiplatelet therapy duration is desired or when bleeding risk is high.

Usage

Usage note: Always hyphenate when used as an adjective before a noun.

  • "The patient received a bare metal stent due to high bleeding risk requiring early DAPT discontinuation." — Interventional procedure report
