bifurcation lesion

A coronary lesion occurring at or involving a vessel branch point, requiring specialized intervention techniques.

Full Definition

A bifurcation lesion involves atherosclerotic disease at the junction of a main coronary vessel and its side branch. These lesions are classified using the Medina classification system based on the distribution of disease in the main vessel and side branch. Bifurcation interventions are technically challenging and may require specialized techniques including provisional stenting, crush techniques, or dedicated bifurcation devices. The risk of side branch occlusion and need for complex stenting strategies make these interventions particularly demanding.

Usage

Usage note: Always use the complete term; 'bifurcation' alone may be ambiguous in cardiac contexts.

In Context

  • "The left main bifurcation lesion was treated with a provisional stenting strategy." — Complex interventional procedure
  • "Medina classification 1,1,1 bifurcation lesions require careful planning for optimal outcomes." — Educational clinical material
