Cardiac troponin is a regulatory protein complex found specifically in cardiac muscle that serves as the gold standard biomarker for detecting myocardial injury. The two clinically relevant forms are troponin I (cTnI) and troponin T (cTnT), both released into circulation when cardiac myocytes are damaged. Modern high-sensitivity assays can detect very small amounts of troponin, allowing for earlier diagnosis of myocardial infarction and risk stratification in acute coronary syndromes. Elevated levels guide clinical decision-making regarding the need for invasive intervention.
