edge restenosis

Recurrent narrowing occurring at the proximal or distal margins of a previously placed stent.

Full Definition

A pattern of in-stent restenosis characterized by neointimal proliferation at the junction between stented and unstented vessel segments. Edge restenosis typically occurs within 5mm of stent borders and may result from geographic miss, mechanical injury from stent edges, or local hemodynamic factors. The condition is distinguished from focal in-stent restenosis by its specific location at stent margins. Risk factors include aggressive stent oversizing, vessel size mismatch, and incomplete lesion coverage. Treatment usually requires additional stent placement to cover the restenotic segment.

Usage

Usage note: Hyphenate compound modifier; specify proximal versus distal edge when relevant.
