stent thrombosis

Formation of blood clot within a previously implanted coronary stent, potentially causing vessel re-occlusion.

Full Definition

Stent thrombosis is a serious complication characterised by the formation of thrombus within or adjacent to a previously implanted stent, leading to acute vessel occlusion. It can occur acutely (within 24 hours), subacutely (1-30 days), late (30 days to 1 year), or very late (beyond 1 year) after stent implantation. Risk factors include premature discontinuation of dual antiplatelet therapy, under-expansion of the stent, and patient-specific factors such as diabetes or malignancy. The condition typically presents as acute coronary syndrome and requires urgent intervention.

Usage

Usage note: Do not hyphenate. Sometimes abbreviated as ST, but ensure context prevents confusion with ST-segment.
