Inadequate stent deployment resulting in suboptimal luminal dimensions relative to reference vessel diameter.

Full Definition

A technical failure characterized by insufficient stent expansion during deployment, resulting in smaller than optimal luminal cross-sectional area. Stent underexpansion may result from inadequate balloon pressure, vessel calcification, stent design limitations, or improper sizing. Intravascular imaging often reveals underexpansion not apparent on angiography alone. The condition predisposes to acute thrombosis and late restenosis by creating areas of flow disturbance and incomplete vessel wall coverage. Correction typically requires high-pressure balloon inflation or additional stent placement.
