Full Definition

A mechanical valve is a prosthetic heart valve constructed from durable materials such as titanium, carbon, or synthetic polymers designed to last decades. These valves feature moving parts that control blood flow direction but create turbulent flow patterns that activate the coagulation cascade, necessitating lifelong anticoagulation therapy. Common types include bileaflet valves and tilting disc designs. While mechanical valves offer excellent durability, they carry risks of thromboembolism, bleeding from anticoagulation, and prosthetic valve endocarditis.
