ACCORD study
Also written as: ACCORD — Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes
Major clinical trial examining intensive glucose control in type 2 diabetes with cardiovascular outcomes.
Full Definition
The Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) study was a landmark randomized controlled trial that investigated whether intensive glycemic control (target HbA1c <6.0%) compared to standard control would reduce cardiovascular events in high-risk patients with type 2 diabetes. The study was terminated early due to increased mortality in the intensive treatment arm, fundamentally changing diabetes management guidelines and emphasizing individualized treatment targets.
