Adipose tissue inflammation refers to the chronic, low-grade inflammatory condition that develops within expanded adipose tissue depots, particularly visceral fat, in obesity and metabolic dysfunction. This inflammation is characterized by macrophage infiltration, increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α and IL-6), and reduced anti-inflammatory adipokine secretion. Adipose tissue inflammation is recognized as a key mechanistic link between obesity and insulin resistance, contributing to the development of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other cardiometabolic complications. The inflammatory milieu also affects neighboring tissues and systemic metabolism.
