Apolipoprotein B (APO B) is the primary protein component of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), and other atherogenic particles. Unlike LDL cholesterol, which measures cholesterol content, APO B reflects the actual number of atherogenic particles in circulation. Each atherogenic lipoprotein particle contains exactly one APO B molecule, making it a more precise marker of cardiovascular risk. Elevated APO B levels are associated with increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, particularly in patients with diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
